News | I-Con 31 Coverage | Doctor Whocast

We Whocasters got our chance to celebrate and honor Doctor Who and some of its stars, as we hung out at the Stony Brook University campus, home to Long Island’s I-Con, a couple of weeks ago. What is I-Con, you ask?  I-Con is a convention which celebrates geekdom in many forms. The convention contains a vast array of dealers and merchants; there are also numerous panels, including many discussions to be had. Plus, it was complete with Cosplay galore!

This past I-Con had just celebrated its 31st consecutive year, and I had the privilege of being one of the many attendees for this fun-filled, annual event! Aside from the conveniently close location, what had really prompted me to go, this year, were the few Doctor Who alumni who had graced every Whovian’s presence.  Among the Doctor Who-related guests, were: Paul McGann, Frazer Hynes, Daphne Ashbrook, Colin Spaull, and the man behind the Dalek, Steve Gostelow.

As life would have it on Doctor Who, time is a precious thing, and I don’t even own a TARDIS, unfortunately, so I had to catch whatever I could in the limited time that I was physically on the grounds. Friday night was spent entirely in the Dealer’s Room, as I had arrived later than most of the convention goers. Upon perusing the floor, I did happen to find several booths dedicated to Doctor Whocast’s beloved show. And let me tell you, I felt like a kid in a candy store! My first purchase was a set of four, Seal of Rasillon coasters that I had bought from Gallifreyan Embassy.  The coasters are blue and made of a leather-like material, which provides slight durability, albeit, I will most likely keep them out for display and not use them for their intended purpose, as to keep them in good condition.

(You can follow her on Twitter: @memyselflandliz) What Liz has presented to us is an adorable piece of artisanship in the form of a Cat playpen or scratching post in the shape of, you’ve guessed it, a TARDIS! Liz happened to find this Catastic gem on the io9.com site. What we have pictured below is something fun for your feline. Now, your cats can experience the Doctor Who, “bigger on the inside” concept, too. WHO knew? ;-)

Have I got a special treat for you today, my fellow Wholigans! Today, I had surfed the web to find that the trailer for the Doctor Who video game, Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock has been released this week. It was very exciting to see some actual game footage, and it’s only making me anticipate this game that much more. Granted, the graphics aren’t nearly as top-notch as most of the current games out there, but it still looks pretty damn good, considering. Plus, you get to encounter the myriad of The Doctor’s enemies, which I personally think they did a fine job replicating their appearances. One of the best features, I’ve found, is that you can play as, both, The Doctor and River Song – tell me that’s not awesome! Please, have a look for yourselves, and also feel free to, either, email or Tweet us with what you thought of this. (You can view this video straight below or visit either site where it’s featured: scifi.icanhascheezburger.com or youtube.com.)

REVIEW | THE DOCTOR, THE WIDOW AND THE WARDROBE | DOCTOR WHO CAST

We hope you fellow Whovians had a delightfully joyous, holiday season. Now that we’ve unwrapped all of our Doctor Who goodies and have settled down from all the holiday WHOpla, we are finally ready to delve into some more thoughts from this season’s Doctor Who Christmas Special: The Doctor, The Widow and the Wardrobe. Many of you may have already heard our feedback and opinions via our podcast, but in case any of you had missed it, we’re providing you with a written overview of the episode, as well. Be forewarned, though; spoilers ahead!

The Doctor, The Widow and The Wardrobe begins with The Doctor falling to Earth from an exploding ship in outer-space. Once he has landed, suited up in space apparel, an unsuspecting woman, Madge Arwell, encounters him (backwards helmet and all) in a self-made ditch and escorts him back to his TARDIS. The Doctor, then, informs Madge that if she makes a mere wish that she shall see him again. Several years later, Madge receives word that her husband, a WWII pilot, has crashed his plane and perished. Keeping this news from her, children, Lily and Cyril, Madge decides to provide a normal, happy Christmas for them. Upon doing so, she follows The Doctor’s orders and makes a wish. Lo and behold, the Arwell family takes a holiday to their relatives house, only to be greeted by “The Caretaker”, a.k.a., The Doctor. Whilst showing them the quirky additions and decorative touches he’s made to the house, a mysterious blue present is found in the sitting room, where all of the adventures shall ensue.
